In most markets the shelf still holds a lot of carbon-zinc cells, bought on unit price. In a wall clock the difference hardly shows. In a torch, a camera or a game controller it shows immediately: an alkaline cell delivers up to ten times the run time, so the cheaper battery is replaced many times over before the alkaline one is finished.

Voltage behaviour differs too. Carbon-zinc voltage sags steadily under load, which is why a torch dims long before it dies. Alkaline chemistry holds a flatter discharge curve, so brightness and device performance stay consistent almost to the end. And a cheap cell left in a device over a long idle period is the classic cause of leaked electrolyte corroding contacts and destroying the equipment it was powering.

What do the codes LR06 and LR03 mean?

They are the IEC 60086 designations that identify the cell precisely. L means alkaline chemistry, R means a round cell, and the number gives the physical size. LR06 is the AA cell and LR03 is the AAA cell — both nominally 1.5 volts. The codes matter for trade and import documentation, where AA and AAA are informal names that vary by market while the IEC code does not.

How much longer does alkaline last than a carbon-zinc battery?

In high-drain devices such as cameras, game controllers and flashlights, alkaline cells run up to ten times longer than standard carbon-zinc. The gap narrows in very low-drain devices like wall clocks, where either chemistry lasts a long time. Can alkaline batteries be recharged?
