Much of what passes for corporate sustainability is accounting after the fact — emissions produced, then offset elsewhere. That approach leaves the underlying product and process unchanged, and for a manufacturer of batteries, lubricants and tyres it addresses very little of the actual impact.
A lifecycle approach makes the decision at each stage instead. At the input stage, that means energy-efficient manufacturing and responsibly sourced raw materials. In design, it means building products that last longer, because a battery that serves seven years rather than three halves the material consumed to deliver the same service. In distribution, biodegradable and reusable packaging. And at end of life, recovery and recycling so material re-enters use rather than reaching landfill.
