Every figure on the sidewall carries specific meaning. Using 295/80R22.5 with a 152/149 L marking as the example:

Older notation such as 11R22.5 or 12R22.5 gives the section width in inches instead of millimetres. Both appear in the Bison Trax range. Fitting a tyre below the vehicle manufacturer's specified load index or speed symbol is unsafe and generally invalidates insurance.

How do I read a TBR tyre size like 295/80R22.5?
The first number, 295, is the section width in millimetres. The 80 is the aspect ratio — the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, so 80% of 295 mm. The R means radial construction, and 22.5 is the rim diameter in inches. So 295/80R22.5 is a 295 mm wide radial tyre with an 80 series sidewall for a 22.5 inch rim. Sizes written as 11R22.5 or 12R22.5 use the older notation where 11 or 12 is the section width in inches.
What do ply rating, load index and speed rating mean?
Ply rating indicates load-carrying strength — Bison Trax is offered in 16, 18 and 20 PR, with higher ratings carrying more load. Load index is the actual capacity per tyre, shown as two figures such as 152/149 for single and dual fitment. Speed rating caps the sustained speed: L is 120 km/h and M is 130 km/h. What does retreadable mean and why does it matter to a fleet?
Retreading applies new tread to a sound used casing, giving the tyre a second or third working life at a fraction of the cost of a new one. This only works if the casing was built to survive the first life intact, which is what the all-steel radial construction is for. What do the BIS, ECE R54 and DOT certifications cover?
These are the three main approval regimes for commercial tyres. ECE R54 is the United Nations regulation for commercial vehicle tyres, recognised across Europe, Africa and much of the Middle East. DOT is the United States Department of Transportation marking. BIS is the Indian standard.
