OTR tyres are classified by service category and tread depth under the TRA and ISO 4250 standards. The letter says what the machine does; the number says how deep the tread is.

What do OTR tread codes like E3, L3, L4 and L5 mean?

The letter is the service category and the number is the tread depth class. E covers earthmover and haulage service, L covers loader and dozer service, and G covers graders. The number rises with tread depth: 3 is standard rock tread, 4 is deep tread with roughly 1.5 times the depth, and 5 is extra deep, usually a smooth or near-smooth pattern for maximum wear life. Which tread pattern suits which application?

Rock tread (E3/L3) is the general-purpose choice for mixed surfaces and moderate cut risk. Deep tread (E4/L4) suits abrasive conditions and heavy loader work where wear life is the priority. L5 smooth maximises rubber on the ground for the longest possible life in underground or heavily abrasive conditions, with reduced self-cleaning. Matching pattern to underfoot conditions has more effect on cost per hour than brand alone.

Why does a self-cleaning tread matter on site?
