The Challenge

A Cleaner Fuel Creates Different Problems

It is tempting to assume that because gaseous fuels burn cleanly, they are easier on an engine's oil. The opposite is closer to the truth — they are simply harder on it in different ways, and the protections built into a diesel oil are the wrong ones.

Gas engines run hotter and leaner, which drives oxidation and nitration: reactions that thicken the oil and lay down varnish. Because the fuel leaves almost no residue in the combustion chamber, there is nothing cushioning the exhaust valve against its seat, so the valve steadily recedes into it and compression falls away. And with very little sulphur in the fuel, the heavy alkaline additive load a diesel oil carries has nothing useful to neutralise — it simply leaves ash on spark plugs and valves, causing misfires and pre-ignition, and poisoning the catalytic converter.

Bloom Max gas engine oil is formulated for those conditions rather than adapted from diesel: low ash below 0.5%, a TBN of 6 to 8 matched to low-sulphur gaseous fuel, dedicated anti-wear chemistry for valve and seat protection, and nitration and oxidation resistance to hold viscosity across the drain interval. Running diesel oil in a gas engine is one of the most common and expensive maintenance errors in converted fleets. These are the differences that matter.

Why can't I use diesel oil in a gas engine?

Gas engines run hotter, burn a much cleaner fuel, and rely on spark ignition. Diesel oil carries a high additive and ash load designed to neutralise sulphur acids and suspend soot — neither of which gas combustion produces in quantity. In a gas engine that surplus ash forms deposits on spark plugs, valves and pistons, causing misfires and pre-ignition, and can poison the catalytic converter. Gas engine oil is a different formulation, not a lighter version of the same thing.

Why is the TBN lower than diesel oil, at 6 to 8?

This looks counterintuitive but is deliberate. TBN is an alkaline reserve for neutralising combustion acids, and those acids come largely from sulphur in the fuel. Natural gas, CNG and LPG contain very little sulphur, so a large reserve is not needed. Because that reserve comes from metallic additives that leave ash behind, an unnecessarily high TBN would actively cause deposit and catalyst problems. A TBN of 6 to 8 is matched to the fuel — where a diesel oil's 10 to 12 would be wrong here.

What is valve recession, and why do gas engines suffer from it?

Valve recession is the exhaust valve gradually sinking into its seat as the two wear against each other. Diesel and petrol fuels leave a small amount of residue that acts as a cushion between valve and seat. Gaseous fuels burn so cleanly they leave almost none, so metal contacts metal at high temperature and the valve beds in further with each cycle — eventually losing valve clearance and compression. Gas engine oil uses specific anti-wear additives to protect that interface.

What is nitration, and how does it affect the oil?

Gas engines run hot and lean, which promotes reactions between nitrogen oxides and the oil. The nitration by-products thicken the oil and form varnish and deposits. Thickened oil circulates poorly and raises operating temperature further, accelerating the process. Nitration resistance is what keeps viscosity stable across the drain interval in gas service, and it is rarely a limiting factor in diesel oils.

What does low ash mean and why does it matter here?

Sulphated ash is the residue metallic additives leave after combustion. This oil is formulated below 0.5%.
