Diesel combustion is harder on lubricant than petrol combustion in three specific ways. It produces far more soot, and in engines with exhaust gas recirculation some of that soot ends up in the sump, where clumped particles thicken the oil and act as an abrasive. It generates acids that attack bearing surfaces and cylinder walls, particularly where fuel sulphur content is high. And turbocharger bearings run hot enough to coke ordinary oil into hard deposits that block the very passages feeding them.
Each of those is met by a different part of the formulation. Dispersants hold soot particles apart so they stay suspended and harmless. An alkaline reserve — measured as Total Base Number — neutralises acids as they form, and depletes steadily until it runs out. ZDDP anti-wear chemistry maintains a protective film on loaded surfaces.
